Africana- Painting by Alice B. Johnson.
Hello Diggers. Been a while since I have blogged. Been busy at work and trying to get a PhD. But in honor of Black History month I am posting this fabulous painting by my late mother called Africana. As you can see it depicts African people in all their regalia before enslavement in the mother land. The painting also reminds me of Genesis 1:26-28, when he said we are in his image and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth.... I have not made any new discoveries in my own personal genealogical journey so I will be compiling all I have. In honor of Black history I will share each week some one who made history in my family, even if a small thing. TWO GREAT GREAT GRANDPARENTS George B. Dykes(Dikes) - According to the 1870 census , 5 years after the ending of slavery, had 60 acres of land and livestock. They had at-least 13 children, one being my great grandmother. After his death his wife Patsey , still owned the land in 1880 and in 1900 was raising my grandmother and her siblings after the probable death of my great grandmother. More about the land in later post.
