My father died the week of Thanksgiving week 1991 of lung cancer. In the process of going through his things I came across papers where he had his side of his family history , going back to his Great great grandfather, born in 1935, who happened to be in the Carolina Legislature during the reconstruction. My interest was peeked and I wanted to know about my mother's side of the family. All I knew was my great grandmother's name who my mother was named after. Back then there was no ancestry.com, so I made many trips to the New York City archives and spent hours going through microfilms of census from the area my grandmother was raised.
One day I was going through the microfilms for hours and was tired and ready to leave. I started to leave, when a voice said " keep going.. One more turn and there was my grandmother, her sister and two brothers living with their aunt in 1910. This discovery and opened so many doors to my family history. I can not trace my family on both sides back to the early 1800's . No small thing for an African American. I have pretty idea who may who have been my ancestors enslavers and working hard to brake the brick wall. Join me in my journey, tell your stories and ask questions. I will be happy to assist. Dedie |
