Hello Diggers! Haven't written in here in awhile. Hope it was worth the wait, what I am about to share. I went to Washington , DC in September to the Black International Genealogy Summit. It was great and I learned a lot. I want to share with you some of the resources I learned about and I have been busy using for my own research. My head has been spinning. First go to the website "Chronicling America". It will bring up old newspapers that might have stories about your ancestors! I found out my grandmother and siblings were taken to court over land by relatives who later lost the land and also there were some early deaths. More on that later! Two in one. Familysearch.org where you can go to Freedmans' Bureau records that have been recently digitized and find out about your ancestors who may have registered with them after the civil war. My great great great grandparents registered their marriage! Information.
And thirdly, and timely for this time of year, Voter registrations you can find on Ancestry.com. Black people were put through all kinds of tests in order to register to vote, in the process a lot of information may have been gathered. So happy digging and look forward to my next blog: TELLIN' FAMILY SECRETS I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW ABOUT! ...DEDIE, THE FAMILY GRIOT!
